I had the opportunity to be on Andrea Owen’s podcast recently, and we wanted to share that conversation here on the She Saves Herself podcast.
I have a question for you: What keeps you up at night?
This is one of my favorite questions to ask people. And I don’t mean the dog waking you up to go outside. I’m talking about the thing in your heart of hearts — the thing that lives inside your body and keeps coming back to you.
For me, it’s the idea of dying with words still left inside of me.
I’m not trying to be morbid, but that’s how important writing is to me. I’ve made a career out of writing, and I’m so thankful for that, but it’s more than a career. It’s a purpose. It’s a passion. To me, writing is like breathing.
In today’s episode, we talk about the power of healing through writing — whether it’s journaling, writing a book, writing poems, or creative expression in any form. As you may have seen, I’ve been writing more songs lately and getting into cooking and recipes. Writing, in all its forms, has the power to transform us.
You don’t want to miss this episode. Whether you call yourself a writer or not, this one is juicy, because all of us, deep down, have a longing for something more — a creative expression. It’s part of what it means to be human.
We also talk about why, now more than ever, writing can have a powerful impact on the world. We invite you to join us for our webinar next Tuesday, and we share a little behind the scenes about why we both write and how our journeys have evolved.
In this episode, we also dive into:
• Why writing is one of the most powerful tools for healing — even if you never publish a word
• The difference between writing that processes pain and writing that actually transforms it
• Why so many people struggle to trust their voice (and what’s really underneath that)
• The question I love asking: What keeps you up at night? — and why the answer might be the very thing you’re here to write
• Andrea and I share our super-secret writing projects we haven’t announced anywhere else
• What I discovered when I wrote the most vulnerable story I lived as fiction first
• Why the reaction you’re afraid of can also be the clarity you need
• How writing to one person instead of an audience can change everything
• How certain relationships and life experiences became the catalyst for our biggest personal transformations
• Why human stories matter more than ever — and what makes writing truly connect right now
Andrea is one of my good friends, so this really feels like sitting down at a coffee shop together.
So grab your favorite latte and tune in. ☕
This episode is not just for people who consider themselves writers! It’s for anyone who has something inside them that wants to come out, whether that’s a memoir, a poem, a Substack post, or a raw caption about what’s happening in the world right now. Andrea and I have been writing professionally for nearly 20 years, and in this conversation we get honest about fear, voice, silence, and the behind the scenes of our process and how we move though fear and why now, more than ever, your story needs to be told.
Andrea and I are both in the thick of writing the words we are here to say, both pushing against the publishing industry’s-tired advice to stick to what sells, and how we are believing in ourselves, and message and letting that drive us forward. We are determined to show you the power of your own voice and convinced that your story (however messy, however unfinished), matters.
We hope this conversation gives you permission to start!
